A world traveler he roamed most of the globe back
in the seventies and eighties when traveling was safe and easy, especially if
you were a Dane. Africa, Australia, South America, Arctic and Antarctic, The
Golden Triangle, the Himalayas, always toting 2 or 3 cameras, mostly shooting
black and white. After several Atlantic crossings in his sailboat he finally
settled on St Croix in 1988, just in time for hurricane Hugo, was here he met
and married artist Jan Mitchell. It was a match made in Heaven and the next few
years was dedicated to building up and modernizing what is now known as the
Mitchell Larsen Studio. About the same time Steffen bought his first
digital Camera and once again photography became his hobby, this time in color.
Lots of color. Seven cameras later Steffen was faced with an ultimatum from his
wife: Either start making all this equipment pay for itself or do something
else. His latest camera is a Contax 645 with a Phase One P 20 digital back,
so we are talking big bucks. Add to that a very powerful computer and the best
in wide format printing . Yes, you can drive a pickup, but there is something
about a Rolls Royce. Steffen loves all the old stuff, and there is a lot of that
on St Croix .Both he and Jan Mitchell are doing their part in making sure that
our historic inheritance is preserved. His photographs often show the decay and
the badly maintained structures of his Island but somehow manages to bring out
the beauty in them.It sometimes takes 2-3 days to edit a photo and 15-20
printouts before it passes muster. As for the result? Judge for yourself.
